From switching to a new internal software, to hiring a new librarian, the on-campus library has undergone a few changes over summer break. Thomas library announced most of the changes in their September newsletter. Specifically however, there are a couple new interactive features available to students: a sensory room and a treadmill.

In what used to be a normal study room, students can now enjoy a designated sensory room. Refurbished room 320, located upstairs near the elevator, is available to all patrons.

The "Sensory Friendly Study Room" features a swing hammock, a weighted blanket, a variety of fidget toys, a mood light, and more. It was made in collaboration with the Tiger Counseling Center that has their own sensory room in Shouvlin.

Library Director Amanda McLellan said that the idea for a library sensory room had been talked about for years. "The library is just trying to expand our offerings to students with different studying habits and needs."

One of the most unique features of the room is the robotic therapy cat that purrs and meows. The librarians held a contest for students to decide the cat's official name. "If a student is processing emotions and wants to pet something soft... or is missing a pet at home, that is available to them," said McLellan.

The library has also purchased a small remote-controlled walking pad for patrons to use. McLellan said the idea is a creative solution to the problem of how to repurpose the raised, formerly designated computer catalog desks that are now void of computers.

There are also opportunities for students that want to get more involved with the Thomas Library. The "MurALL: Public Art and Community" FIRE Week trip gives students the chance to paint a mural on one of the library's cement columns. The application deadline is November 5th.

Students can also sign up to be a part of the Student Advisory board. Volunteers will meet with the library staff a few times a year to talk about ideas, plans, and suggestions for the library.
