Introducing the New Latin Student Union

Mi Gente is the new Latin student union on campus.

The organization hosts events related to Latin food, cultural traditions, holidays, and teaching dance steps. In line with Latin traditions, Mi Gente focuses on building community for Latin Wittenberg students, and for the Witt community to learn more about Latin heritage and influence across the Americas.

Started in the fall of 2024, it was co-founded by senior Gabriela Gonzalez and Anthony Villacis, who graduated last spring. When Gonzalez first arrived here, she noticed the lack of representation for Latin students on campus. She said she wanted to create a sense of community and an opportunity to share Latin culture at Wittenberg.

Gonzalez also made sure that graduation stoles representing the Latin backgrounds of students were included for Hitumi Graduation (a ceremony celebrating the cultures of graduation seniors).

“It’s very rewarding getting to see people to come together and celebrate Latin culture,” says Gonzalez. “I hope that when I’ve left Witt, that people will keep the club going and continue to collaborate with other organizations on campus.” She hopes the organization will give a lot of students exposure to Latin culture, as well as a chance to learn and share about the community.
