Mike and Rosy’s Deli has been a Springfield favorite since 1997. Because of its proximity to Wittenberg University's campus, it's been a hotspot for the college students to grab a bite to eat. The deli offers "gourmet deli, sandwiches, fresh bagels, homemade soups, pizzas, and more” according to its website. The deli is famously known for its roast beef, Philly cheesesteaks, and famous hoagie sandwiches.
Bob Rosencrans, often referred to as “Rosy,” was a co-owner of the deli. Rosy was a former Athletic Director at Wittenberg University from 1982 to 1995 and was inducted into the Wittenberg Hall of Honor in 2000. A few years later, in 2002, the university dedicated its new fitness center to him by naming it “The Bob Rosencrans Fitness Center.” Rosy was 40 when he partnered with 19-year-old Mike Wagner to open the deli. The two met through Wittenberg University connections and local sports. Wagner was a kid from Springfield with a dream in food, so he decided to partner with a local legend and made his dreams come true. (Rosencrans died in 2006 of ALS.)
After trying the deli for the first time, I can understand why the famous hoagie ($10.75) is called the “famous” hoagie. Featuring a delicious warm bun with the perfect amount of meat, the sandwich consisted of two distinct types of ham and salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, and a delicious dressing of olive oil, vinegar, and oregano. With a generous coating of dressing, you could savor this sandwich in every bite. The sandwich is also served with delicious pickles that are a great side that enhances the flavor of the sandwich. When going to Mike and Rosy’s deli, the famous hoagie is definitely recommended.
Inside the deli, it is a warm inviting environment. The deli gives off an “old-school vibe,” making it relatable to their target audience – college students. Beyond the deli itself, there is also Rosy’s press box, the bar upstairs. The press box has the perfect setup for a Wittenberg gameday no matter what sport!
If you want to feel at home and eat some delicious deli, stop at Mike and Rosy’s deli and or Rosy’s Press Box for a great time, great service, and great food.
