Wittenberg sports are back in full swing after a week back from spring break, and it's starting to become crunch time for some programs, with several teams beginning their first conference matchups of the season. Let's take a look at what's happening for Athletics this week.
TUESDAY, MARCH 24
The week began yesterday with some softball and baseball action, both away and at home. The softball program was on the road for a doubleheader matchup against Muskingum University, seeing the series be split 1-1, with the Tigers winning game one 8-7 in a close matchup, but coming up short in game two, losing 8-1. The softball team moved to a 9-7 season record after what was their last set of games before beginning conference play.
The baseball program is continuing its hot streak, hosting Wilmington yesterday and coming out on top 15-9. This team is currently on a six-game win streak and currently has a 15-5 season record before they too also begin conference play. In addition, senior outfield Quintin Applegate earned NCAC Athlete of the Week honors for his performance last week, scoring seven runs and driving in nine RBIs to lead his team to four wins in a week.
FRIDAY, MARCH 27
Men's volleyball will have a special home game this Friday, as they host their senior recognition day at 7 p.m. in Pam Evans Smith Arena. They'll be playing against conference opponent Mount Union, and the Tigers look to continue their win streak, as they have won their last five games. They currently have a 4-1 conference record and look towards carrying their momentum into the end of their season.
Other events occurring include women's lacrosse vs. Elmhurst in the Wittenberg Stadium at 4 p.m. The program won their first two games of the season last week against Muskingum and Trine and look to continue their winning ways, while women's flag football will be traveling to Campbellsville University to play against Cumberlands at 10:30 a.m. The men's and women's track teams will travel to Emory University in Atlanta for a two-day show at the Emory Thrills in the Hills meet following a very successful meet in the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships.
SATURDAY, MARCH 28
Saturday will be the busiest day of the week, with seven teams playing either at home or away. Both the baseball and softball teams will play their first conference games of the season, with softball traveling to Denison for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively. Baseball will host DePauw for their own doubleheader, playing at noon and 3 p.m.
Both the men's and women's tennis teams will begin conference play by traveling to Wooster for matchups beginning at 2 p.m., and they look to rebound for what has been a tough season for both programs. Men's tennis sophomore Ben Glassman earned NCAC Athlete of the Week honors for his performance over spring break, going on a 3-0 record in the team's victories over Hastings and Berea. Additionally, the men's team will host Wabash on Sunday for a non-conference matchup with a currently unscheduled start time.
Men's volleyball will play their final home regular season game, hosting conference opponent Baldwin Wallace in Pam Evans Smith Arena at 1 p.m. Men's lacrosse will travel to Kenyon for a conference matchup at 1 p.m. The program looks to rebound after a tough 19-1 loss against Wooster for their first conference game of the season last Saturday. Women's flag football also continues their time in Campbellsville, playing two additional games against Lindsey Wilson at 9:30 a.m. and Siena Heights at 2:30 p.m.
A busy week lies ahead full of important conference matchups for Wittenberg's student athletes. Make sure to come out to the games to support your Tigers!
